Okay, I'm not talking annoying prayers like the the ones you find at the back of churches or the back of the Irish Catholic promising that they never fail (really?) and all you have to day is say them nine different ways and place nine different copies in nine different places on nine different days.  I don't mean those sort of prayers.

Sigh

Posted by Christopher Mc on Saturday, October 23, 2010, In : Family and friends

I like cardigans.  I have always liked cardigans.  Twenty years ago I had, probably a dozen at least.  So I'm very happy to see them back in fashion and I'm gradually rebuilding my collection.  Cardigans are like jumpers only better.  They've got pockets.  You don't have to put them on over your head and wreck your hair.  If it's cold you close them.  A little warmer, you open them.  Wanna wear a shirt and tie with them?  That's fine too.

So I was out in Tesco's tonight buying water filters ...

An opportunity (missed)

Posted by Christopher Mc on Thursday, October 21, 2010, In : Church in Ireland

Just when you think you can't be any more surprised by the way the Church in Ireland behaves you see something else shocking.

I was watching iWitness on RTE tonight.  It's a one minute "thought for the day" type programme - usually some pious platitude.  But tonight it featured a woman who was brought up a Catholic - well she called it "Roman Catholic".  It meant little to her and then she met someone who introduced her to the Bahai faith.  It has brought meaning and changed her life, as well ...

PHOTO OF PRETTY GIRL WITH CHARMING HAT, AND HER MATE, HAS BEEN REMOVED BECAUSE SHE ASKED ME NICELY.  SHE'LL HAVE TO TELL THE ULSTER TATLER THEY SPELT HER NAME WRONG.

Found this nice quote on integrated education:

"consists of nothing else other than self-righteous, pompous claims of reconciliation, no more amazing than claiming they can fit 200 people into the back seat of a Mini".

"Far from transcending sectarianism with some stupendous alternative for the provision of education in Northern ...

"Above all, your time in seminary is a time of study"

Posted by Christopher Mc on Monday, October 18, 2010, In : Pope

The Holy Father has written a rather good letter to seminarians.  You can read the whole thing here.

Below I've summarised and provided some of the high lights.  I think one of the critical lines is "Above all, your time in seminary is a time of study".  For too long, certainly in Ireland, seminarians have been made to feel, and in many cases been explicitly told, that their studies are the least important element of their training. They are encouraged to love Canon Law!  For "law is the condi...

Unless you've been sitting ,in the dark or waiting for a call from the BBC for a vacant spot on Thought for the Day you can't but have noticed that we have what they call a "Vocations Crisis" or as bishops and vocations directors call it "an opportunity for greater lay involvement".

So what's with all the attacks on Catholic education in Northern Ireland?  Peter Robinson doesn't think we should be funding segregated faith based schooling.  Of course never actually mentions the Catholic word.  Maybe he means the Free Presbyterian schools.  Owen Paterson, NI Secretary of State has labeled them a "criminal waste of public money".

Donal McKeown has been defending them, on the basis of parental choice.

What, like grammar schools?

Wonder what Robinson is up to?  What's the plan? ...

For a long time now we've been listening to talk off a wake up call for the Church in Ireland.

Clearly the call hasn't reached Somerton Road

One thing you're supposed to learn in seminary is how to get up in the morning.  So you have to wonder how the Bishop of Down and Connor managed to sleep in on 4th October and miss the Mass he was supposed to be celebrating at the Poor Clare Colettine Monastery of Our Lady and St Michael on the Cliftonville Road for the Feast of St Francis.

One of those funny experiences on the train this evening.  Transport has always struck me as a most unusual experience.  You find yourself in much closer proximity to other people than you would ever be normally, even with people you know well.  Twenty people squeezed in at the door.  For me, this evening, a seat, because I missed my usual train and thus had town to dart across to Westland Row where the train starts.  Sitting in the four seats with table position, I was listening to the conve...

Today we were just departing from visiting the in-laws in Letterkenny.  As usual the kids had been given money by their granda before leaving - he's very generous with them.   So as we drove off it began "can we go to the toy shop on the way home?"  No. "Can we go tomorrow after school?"  No.  "When can we go?  You never let us spend our money.  I want a new Nint...

Some people tell me they are having problems seeing pictures in the blog, including the header in Blog.  Pity.  It's a lovely image of the coronation of Pope Pius XI, a somewhat neglected Pope.  That's him getting into the first Popemobile.  He has written some lovely stuff for contemplatives.  This line from the Canonisation of St Teresa Margaret Redi caught my eye:

By the supreme martyrdom of heart, the loving soul literally attached to the cross with Christ, acquires for itself, and for oth...

We all gathered, en famille, in the depths of darkest Meath this evening for the celebration of the Feast of St Teresa of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face.

It's a big day in the family as our youngest, TB (Teresa Benedicta) is named after the disease that killed St Thérèse of Lisieux.

It was a beautiful Mass.  At one point the priest asked us to hold up our Roses for a blessing.  We hadn't brought Roses, but we did have a box of Marks and Spencer chocolates (reduced from €9.00 to €2.50!)...

Family disagreements

Johnny Logan's always been big in, em, Turkey and Uzbekhistan.  Seems now he's becoming big in clerical circles as well.  His double winning status makes him the perfect chap for the double euphemism.

Unless you've been sitting ,in the dark or waiting for a call from the BBC for a vacant spot on Thought for the Day you can't but have noticed that we have what they call a "Vocations Crisis" or as bishops and vocations directors call it "an opportunity for greater lay involvement".

Whatever you c...

A part hate

Posted by Christopher Mc on Sunday, October 17, 2010, In : North East Ireland

So what's with all the attacks on Catholic education in Northern Ireland?  Peter Robinson doesn't think we should be funding segregated faith based schooling.  Of course never actually mentions the Catholic word.  Maybe he means the Free Presbyterian schools.  Owen Paterson, NI Secretary of State has labeled them a "criminal waste of public money".

Donal McKeown has been defending them, on the basis of parental choice.

What, like grammar schools?

Wonder what Robinson is up to?  What's the plan? ...

Brother Sun, Sister Moon, time to get up, it's almost noon.

Posted by Christopher Mc on Saturday, October 16, 2010, In : Church in Ireland

For a long time now we've been listening to talk off a wake up call for the Church in Ireland.

Clearly the call hasn't reached Somerton Road

One thing you're supposed to learn in seminary is how to get up in the morning.  So you have to wonder how the Bishop of Down and Connor managed to sleep in on 4th October and miss the Mass he was supposed to be celebrating at the Poor Clare Colettine Monastery of Our Lady and St Michael on the Cliftonville Road for the Feast of St Francis.

Sweet dreams at ...

Miner No. 34 tries to slip out discreetly at the end

The world watched enthralled and moved by the rescue of the thirty three miners from their long captivity underground in Chile.

But after the first ten were out I started thinking, "it might be a bit more interesting if something went wrong about now".

The laughter of happy maidens

Posted by Christopher Mc on Thursday, October 14, 2010, In : Funny

One of those funny experiences on the train this evening.  Transport has always struck me as a most unusual experience.  You find yourself in much closer proximity to other people than you would ever be normally, even with people you know well.  Twenty people squeezed in at the door.  For me, this evening, a seat, because I missed my usual train and thus had town to dart across to Westland Row where the train starts.  Sitting in the four seats with table position, I was listening to the conve...

Funny Michael

Every so often you reverse roles with your children and realise that you can be a bit of a moan while they can be witty and amusing.

Why you leave me Vinnie?

Hands up and head's twist who knows what film that line's from.

I spent some time recently with an exorcist.  I must admit it was fascinating and not in the dull, "that's very interesting but give me the grim details" kind of way.  There were plenty of grim details.  But out of respect for him and for the people he has helped to free I won't give any details.  But some things to share of a general interest which I think it is helpful for us to know:
  • The demons fear and detest the Virgin Mar...

New feature - Books

Posted by Christopher Mc on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, In : Books
Starting a new feature of mini book reviews.  Basically what I'm reading at the moment.  Used to do it in the regular blog but then they would get lost so keeping them separate.  So hurry over and check out Lies by Michael Grant.

If you buy them from Amazon I don't get any money so don't bother - support your local book shop and buy them there instead.

Jimmy Mc Evoy - some memories

Posted by Christopher Mc on Monday, October 4, 2010, In : Church in Ireland

The late Fr Jimmy Mc Evoy, former Professor of Scholastic Philosophy at Queen's University, Belfast, will be buried tomorrow, from St Brigid's.

I've been googling but can't find any obituary yet so thought I would share some of my own memories.

Jimmy Mc Evoy was a major influence on my life.  I don't mean that I was in awe of him or had him as a guide but he pushed me in certain directions which changed my life.   I started Queen's in 1985 - exactly twenty-five years ago today indeed.  I also s...

Comments - more on D'Arcy, Pius XI and St Teresa Margaret Redi

Posted by Christopher Mc on Monday, October 4, 2010, In : Mixed bag

Some people tell me they are having problems seeing pictures in the blog, including the header in Blog.  Pity.  It's a lovely image of the coronation of Pope Pius XI, a somewhat neglected Pope.  That's him getting into the first Popemobile.  He has written some lovely stuff for contemplatives.  This line from the Canonisation of St Teresa Margaret Redi caught my eye:

By the supreme martyrdom of heart, the loving soul literally attached to the cross with Christ, acquires for itself, and for oth...

New Feature

Tinkering around with the features here.  I've added a Video page above.

Apparently Bill Gates wants to control CO2 emissions by controlling population.  You can read more about it here and then go check my video page to see one form this might take.

By the way, called into Easons on Saturday afternoon.  Didn't see any sign of the heretic d'Arsy.  Did my little bit for the cause by hiding his books behind even duller books.

Hail the conquering heroines

Congratulations to Jane Adams and the girls of Antrim for bringing home another All-Ireland in camogie.  Okay, it's at junior level, but still, something to celebrate and hope for future glory.

As I never tire of telling friends from Tipperary, Antrim have won more camogie All-Ireland's than Tipp.

And a nice win for Spurs on Saturday.

That reminds me, must check the score's from today.  What's happened to Liverpool?  They were playing today.  Must check.  Presume they gave Blackpool a hammering ...

You're The First, The Last, My Everything

Posted by Christopher Mc on Friday, October 1, 2010, In : Funny

We all gathered, en famille, in the depths of darkest Meath this evening for the celebration of the Feast of St Teresa of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face.

It's a big day in the family as our youngest, TB (Teresa Benedicta) is named after the disease that killed St Thérèse of Lisieux.

It was a beautiful Mass.  At one point the priest asked us to hold up our Roses for a blessing.  We hadn't brought Roses, but we did have a box of Marks and Spencer chocolates (reduced from €9.00 to €2.50!)...

When will yesterday's man realise it's tomorrow?

Posted by Christopher Mc on Friday, October 1, 2010, In : Church in Ireland

Luckily some time ago I had plexi-glass fitted to the front of our television set.

I certainly needed it just now with the odious, weazly, disgusting creature which is Fr Brian d'ARSEy on yet another appearance on the Late, Late Show.

There is nothing left of this man.  He has become so warped and twisted it's impossible to find any shred, any little bit of religion in him.  We'll probably discover each of his rubbish books is a horcrux.

He tells us he was never a member of the club, never int...
