All Ireland Rally for Life, 2 July 2011, 2pm, Dublin (starting point a secret)

Posted by Christopher Mc on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, In : Current affairs

My friend L has a tendency to badger me into putting things on my blog.  So here some information on the upcoming All-Ireland Rally for Life.  Last year it was in Belfast so this year it's in Dublin, Saturday 2nd July at 2pm.

Now here's the thing - if you go to the Rally for Life website here you will find a range of nice things, including pre-Rally Mass times and venues - what you won't find, at least not easily, is a hint as to where the rally actually starts.  Might be an idea to put that o...

Not talking about any funeral in particular but at Catholic funerals in Ireland -

Vestments should be black or violet
(I'm not aware the Irish Bishops Conference has given permission for white)

Eulogies are not allowed, even for celebrities
Statement by the Episcopal Commission for Liturgy and the Irish Commission for Liturgy on celebrating a Catholic Funeral.  (November 2003) "It should be borne in mind that the Funeral Mass is primarily an act of praise of God; it would therefore go again...

Chill pill shortage at Manse Road

Posted by Christopher Mc on Monday, June 13, 2011, In : North East Ireland

Oh dear.  I seem to have offended the alumni of Lagan College who have stumbled upon my humble site over the last few days.  I did a posting, the point of which was to contrast the educational views of Peter Robinson and his wife, Iris.  Peter was praising integrated education and attacking sectarian schools i.e. Catholic schools and I happened upon a quote from Iris attacking integrated schools.  So the purpose of the post was family discord.

In the process I put up a nice photo of some girls...

Gay Pride

Posted by Christopher Mc on Saturday, June 11, 2011, In : Current affairs

I never thought I'd be saying this but I think I'll be voting to put a Gay into the Aras.  No, not that one, this one.

He's probably the most conservative candidate since Dana.  I had dinner with him once, a truly embarrassing experience.  Someone mentioned bringing the Olympics to Dublin and I thought they were having a laugh and I ploughed in with what a ridiculous idea, beyond stupid, not a single facility suitable for any sport (this was before the aquatic centre had been built).  Everyone...

In two minds

Posted by Christopher Mc on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, In : Liturgy

There are a few things where I don't have a fixed view - one of them is the Extraordinary Form of the Mass.  What I tend to do is react to what I perceive as the prejudices of those who support or oppose.

Basically I have an open mind and the presumption that we should trust the Holy Father, and he thinks there's something in it.  But the problem is that so many of the people one meets on the internet who claim to love the Extraordinary Form, seem rather to hate the Ordinary Form and every cha...

Dead by definition

I see the Gaeltacht is to be defined out of existence. The Cork Examiner is reporting that the Gaeltacht Bill will stipulate that within defined districts there must be "at least two-thirds of a district’s population be shown by census data to be daily speakers of Irish. The language should be predominant in a community’s social and institutional domains, schools should teach entirely through Irish and religious services, businesses, sports clubs and other local activities should be throu...

Bees and atheists

Posted by Christopher Mc on Saturday, June 4, 2011, In : Church in Ireland

Three things I like - the intricacies of the English language, peculiarities of American culture, and people committed and passionate enough to protest at trivialities.

So spelling bees - an American tradition we've all seen on Little House on the Prairie, the intellectual equivalent of those ghastly pageants with little kids dressed to look like they're about to go on Snog, Marry, Avoid?

This weeks National Spelling Bee featured four protestors outside - protesting at the comlexity of spelling...

Posted by Christopher Mc on Thursday, June 2, 2011, In : Current affairs

I fear some people have misunderstood my expression of sympathy for David Norris.  And in a funny way it proves my point, which was that it is almost impossible to discuss any aspect of child abuse.  Attempting to examine any sense of context, explanation, clarification, differentitation immediately turns you into a paedo supporter.

Why are the differences important you might say.  Who cares if the abuser is abusing a fifteen year old rather than an eight year old?  And people have said that t...

As regular readers will know, Catholicus has a well honed eye for fashion failures.  During lunchtime danders one gains a wide insight into the daily dress disasters of Dublin dames.  A trend that's being going for some time is the truly dreadful tights and shorts combination.  I mean, really?  You think this looks good?

Well actually this is probably the best look available - the reality is usually much worse.  So for the fashionistas, some of the worst trends seen around the city:
