Someone asked me the other day if my first loyalty was to the Church or to the State. They asked me as if it were a ridiculous question with only one possible answer. And indeed there is only one possible answer for a Catholic. We are members of the Body of Christ and that is infinitely more important than being citizens or subjects of one State or another. And that is why the decision to close the Embassy to the Holy See has been such a hurtful one for Catholics because the Holy See is more our country than Ireland - it's really that simple. As St Patrick said when he came to Ireland, "As you are children of Christ, be you also children of Rome".
If you have the time and inclination you can register your opposition to the closure of the Embassy next week:
Where: Kildare Street
When: Thursday the 8th of December, The Feast of the Immaculate Conception
What Time: 2-4pm
Why: To protest the decision to close Ireland's embassy to the Holy See.
