Go vote for Tim

Posted by Mc Camley on Thursday, April 5, 2012, In : Church elsewhere

Time magagzine is having a poll of the most influential people.

If you haven't already done so (and even if you have) pop over there now and cast a vote in favour of Drogheda's own (sort of) Timothy Cardinal Dolan.

Stalin sneeringly asked: "How many battalions has the Pope? The Swiss Guard, which is one unit more than the USSR today.

Kevin Myers had an article in the Irish Independent which I think is worth a reprint:

When China emerged from the great civil war of 220-280, and the Western Chin dynasty ruled all, the chancellor brought word to the emperor, Wu Ti, of a new power in the heathen lands to the west.

Though barbaric -- as it must be, consisting of round-eyes who knew nothing of the world, or paper or gunpowder or the compass -- this power was nonetheless strangely compelling.

One rule for priests, another for bishops

Posted by Mc Camley on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, In : Church elsewhere

When an allegation of abuse is made against a priest he is forced to "stand aside".  This is a polite way of saying "you've 24 hours to get out of the presbytery, good luck finding somewhere to live and an income and we might see you back in two years time after the investigation".  This can follow a single anonymous telephone call.

Bishops - watchmen or scarecrows?

Posted by Mc Camley on Monday, September 12, 2011, In : Church elsewhere

St. Augustine of Hippo, speaking on the anniversary of his episcopal ordination, described the bishop’s duties in the following way:

“To rebuke those who stir up strife, to comfort those of little courage, to take the part of the weak, to refute opponents, to be on guard against traps, to teach the ignorant, to shake the indolent awake, to discourage those who want to buy and sell, to put the presumptuous in their place, to modify the quarrelsome, to help the poor, to liberate the oppres...

Earl Abbot of Jerusalem

Posted by Christopher Mc on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, In : Church elsewhere

Some good news
for a friend of mine from Belfast, Fr Gregory Collins, OSB, who's been elected Abbot of the Monastery of the Dormition in Jerusalem.  It's a German foundation and he's the first English speaker elected to the eight year office.

It will be good training for when he is made an Irish bishop or archbishop, please God.

To plug his books a little, he's the author of Meeting Christ in His Mysteries, which "contemplates the sacramental mysteries of Scripture, Baptism, the Eucharist, the ...

An interesting interview

Posted by Christopher Mc on Monday, November 15, 2010, In : Church elsewhere

If you get a chance wander over to the Financial Times for the interview of Archbishop Vincent Nichols by AN Wilson.  I think I would describe it as "charming" with both parties coming across as decent blokes.

I think my favourite line was:

I pause. This is the moment when a killer interviewer would point out that the Irish church has imploded but, somehow, he seems such a nice man that the words “child abuse” simply will not form on my lips.
