Some listener feedback I received after my first EWTN radio appearance last week:
I was impressed by your dispassionate tone, as well as your easy command of the facts, (killing off the retired abbot notwithstanding). Not sure where the empathy issue came up for whoever. I think you would find it easier in studio rather than on the phone. I would have no hesitation in putting you on the radio at any time if you were not such a right wing nut job! It was a longer interview than I expected but I... Continue reading ...
No we can't
The Left Hand of Darkness has kicked off his re-election campaign with a somewhat underwhelming rally in Ohio State University, Toledo (birthplace of Katie Holmes and Jamie Farr "Corporal Klinger"). Remember those huge rallies from four years ago, the crowds spilling out, the standing room only, the "yes we can". Seems we can't anymore. The hall holds about 20,000. The organisers got people out of their seats to fill the arena floor but not before the first photos leaked. He's also decided ... Continue reading ...
My EWTN debut
When a man's an empty kettle He should be on his mettle And yet I'm torn apart Just because I'm presumin' That I could be a human If I only had a heart
I'd be tender, I'd be gentle And awful sentimental Regarding love and art I'd be friends with the sparrows And the boy that shoots the arrows If I only had a heart
Picture me a balcony Above a voice sings low
(Snow White) Wherefore art thou, Romeo?
(Tin Man) I hear a beat, how sweet!
Just to register emotion, jealousy, devotion And really feel the part I could s... Continue reading ...
Irish Catholic, under new ownership
So, as predicted, Garry O'Sullivan, managing editor of the Irish Catholic, has now bought the publication from the Agricultural Trust (Irish Farmer). Not sure if it's himself alone or with other backer. The new address is "St Mary's, Bloomfield Avenue, Dublin 4". Lots of people are based there already - CORI, Progressio Ireland, Catholic Ireland.net There is a little history between us, but I wish him well. It's not easy risking your own money. The Irish Catholic has good points and bad, ... Continue reading ...
Fr Brian D'Arcy, the new George Washington

You know the way Christian speakers of a certain ilk like to pretend they had dreadful pasts - like St Augustine - to prove their street cred and how happening they were before they found Jesus. Well it turns out D'Arcy was a tree-killer. From The Examiner:
The clergyman recalled what he said was the “greatest sin” of his life, when as a novice he was ordered by a superior to cut down 20 cherry trees because the senior figure did not like them. But the trainee priest was challenged the n... Continue reading ...
A little bit of heresy
It has all been a big mistake. Fr Brian D'Arcy hasn't been silenced because of his heresy; it's because he's sh*te. Apparently the Holy Father heard a pod-cast of one of his ghastly programmes, awful music peppered with a "little bit of religion", and ran around the Apostolic Palace, his ears bleeding, shouting "make it stop, make it stop". So they did. Now all Brian's cosy friends in the media are lining up to support him, after all he is a life member of the National Union of Journalists... Continue reading ...
What a difference a day makes
The Irish media have been gushing about the appearance of Joanna O’Riordan at the United Nations. And rightly so. She is a 16 year old from Cork - and as if being from Cork was not enough to warrant gushing, she has total amelia, a condition which means she has no proper limbs. She is extremely positive about her condition and has a tremendous passion. This is reflected in stories in The Cork Examiner, RTE, the Cork Independent, The Sun, the Irish Echo, the Student News and Irish Centr... Continue reading ...
The Archbigot of Tara Street
Patsy McGarry, the perfectly impartial religious correspondent of the Irish Times has another attack piece in the paper to mark the Holy Father's birthday. Most people send a card or gift, maybe a text if you haven't time - Patsy sends an incendiary device. It's so old hat, so yesterday. Still harking back to the disappointment of his election, the disaster for the middle aged, middle of the road, middle of nowhere generation of Catholics. We get the (in reality very short) list of theolog... Continue reading ...
Please complain to RTE - UPDATE!
Update - well don't I feel foolish - the programme I was complaining about was The Savage Eye, not Republic of Telly - but as RTE tells me, the advice holds good. You can watch it again on RTE player, about ten minutes in. And when I went to look again what did I discover but that the sketch was introduced by Archbigot Patsy Mc Garry - he really is a piece of work! -------------------------------------------------RTE's institutional anti-Catholic bias was well on display this evening with it... Doing a Samantha
Really, oh dear. Samantha Brick has penned a follow up article. It really is a struggle to be kind. I think the poor woman is actually delusional and it really is unfair of the Daily Mail to print her articles - they're just holding her up to ridicule. When Erin Walton said "oh Daddy, why am I so pretty?" we all laughed. But this is like watching Kerry Katona on a chat sow. Continue reading ...
A failure of kindness
Oh dear. Brendan O'Neill who writes in the Daily Telegraph (well blogs for them) and whose opinion I respect says we are al big meanies for attacking Samantha Brick. Samantha, you will recall, wrote in the Daily Mail that she had a hard time from women because she's so good looking and I made fun of this here. Brendan writes: Which is sadder: a woman who thinks she is beautiful even though she is actually average-looking, possibly even plain, or the swarming together of thousands and thousa... More on why the truth in journalism is important
You will all have heard of the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman in Florida. I don't know the facts of the case; I wasn't there. But I do know how people try to use these tragic deaths, including President Obama ("If I had a son he'd look like Trayvon"). Certain groups were dismayed to discover the killer wasn't actually white so they began calling him "Hispanic white" - these guys could have taught the South Africans some tricks on race categories. Then having dug around desp... Continue reading ...
You make me want to be a better man.
Shane, who blogs at Lux Occulta, was twittering at Michael Kelly recently asking him to comment on my recent post about which flags really fly at the embassies of Ireland. Mr Kelly response was that I am a crank with a bee in my bonnet about him. Interesting. Still didn't manage to address the flags issue though. Shane said that I was very gossipy - thanks Shane, on a blog I take that as a compliment.A priest contacted me to say that I should not have written the Kelly post as it was washin... Making it up as you go along
Whenever we get a Letter from Rome in the Irish Catholic you always get the sense that it's, well, what's the word? A bit fake, bogus, maybe even invented? This week we get a description of a St Patrick's Day party at the Villa Spada, formerly the Embassy of Ireland to the Holy See and now the official residence of the Ambassador of Ireland to Italy, much to the chagrin of Irish Catholics. There was, I suppose, a certain poignancy in the change of host, driving home what we have lost. But t... Continue reading ...
"Gay marriage" versus "Real Marriage" - the Frontline battle
I was watching RTE's Frontline this evening - a rather broad and shallow debate on religion and secularism. My wife was fighting the good fight on behalf of Catholic schools. She's a lovely voice. She made the very good point that homosexual or divorced teachers will only have problems in Catholic schools if they try to foist their opinions or lifestyles on the Catholic schools - indeed why on earth should children in primary schools even discover these things. The (aggressive) secularists... Continue reading ...
Beating Obama
I very much enjoy following American politics. Possibly because I liked the West Wing, but mainly because the issues seem clearer, the politics more ideological.I'm enjoying Rick Santorum's good run again Mitt Romney because it's reminding the GOP men in grey suits that the evangelical/orthodox Catholic wing are important and their vote needs to be wooed. It's also allowing debates on freedom of religion, contraception, abortion, the role of religious belief in the life of a politician - th... Continue reading ...
RTE disgraced again
So once again the so-called national broadcaster, RTE, has disgraced itself and been found out by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland by using unverified sources during the final presidential debate and then, having found out the source was not legitimate, failing to reveal that during the programme and next day on the Pat Kenny show. It's hard to say for certain what the effect of this was - but Sean Gallagher was in the lead coming into the debate and subsequently lost the election to Mich... Continue reading ...
Shock news: children being aborted in abortion clinic

Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds? Captain Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! [a croupier hands Renault a pile of money] Croupier: Your winnings, sir. Captain Renault: [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much. [aloud] Captain Renault: Everybody out at once!

"Right now I'm a journalist, but I'd like to work my way up to pond scum"
Sam Smyth is catching up with McGarry in the barrel bottom scraping competion. In this "revelation" we learn that an eleven year old boy some fifty years ago was nervous when being asked questions by John Charles Mc Quaid. And the only possible explanation for this, in Sam Smyth's view, is that John Charles was a child molester. These journalists are a credit to their profession. Play their cards right and they could work for RTE. Continue reading ...
Betrayal at home, religion from Rome.
Someone asked me the other day if my first loyalty was to the Church or to the State. They asked me as if it were a ridiculous question with only one possible answer. And indeed there is only one possible answer for a Catholic. We are members of the Body of Christ and that is infinitely more important than being citizens or subjects of one State or another. And that is why the decision to close the Embassy to the Holy See has been such a hurtful one for Catholics because the Holy See is m... Continue reading ...

Rapid ageing

The Daily Telegraph has an interesting but scary story from Vietnam of a young woman whose face aged fifty years almost overnight:
Vietnamese woman Nguyen Thi Phuong now looks like a septugenarian after the rapid aging affliction took hold following an allergic reaction to seafood.
Her sad story began in 2008, when her youthful beauty began to fade over the course of just a few days, leaving her with sagging, wrinkled skin all over her face and body.
Until now she has been forced to wear a... Continue reading ...
RTÉ now fully and unreservedly accepts that the allegations made by Prime Time against Fr. Kevin Reynolds are baseless, without any foundation whatever and untrue and that Fr. Reynolds is a priest of the utmost integrity

Below is the full statement from RTE concerning its scandalous defamation of Fr Kevin Reynolds. Presumably there'll be money involved which the licence payer will provide. Please repeat the story on your own blogs to ensure maximum coverage.
Apology - Fr Kevin Reynolds
On the evening of the 23rd May 2011, RTÉ broadcast a Prime Time Investigates programme entitled "A Mission to Prey".
Before this broadcast Prime Time conducted an interview with Fr. Kevin Reynolds, the then parish priest at... Continue reading ...

In common with the national broadcaster I will be taking an entirely unbiased, totally balanced approach to the upcoming presidential election. In no way will I foist my opinion on my readers. Breaking News.
The Israeli Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, has summoned the Irish Ambassador to Israel, Breifne O'Reilly, to explain why a senior member of the Oireachtas, Senator David Norris, had abused his position as a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs, to interfere in an Israeli court case.

New pro-life slogans
After the Rally for Life on Saturday I was thinking it's time for some new Pro-life slogans, particularly to use against the feminist socialist worker types. So here goes:
- I wouldn't touch your ovaries with my rosaries if they were the last ovaries on earth.
- Your body? Too right, no one else would want it.

Wigs on the Green
This will be a story worth watching - coverage from the Irish Times:
A priest who claims he was libelled in a recent RTÉ Prime Time Investigates programme concerning alleged abuse of children and teenagers in Africa by Irish missionaries will apply later this week for a High Court order aimed at having RTÉ speedily provide its defence to his claim.
Fr Kevin Reynolds, a member of the Mill Hill Missionaries and acting parish priest of Ahascragh, Co Galway, says he is prepared to undergo a pa... Continue reading ...
Interview with Blessed John Paul
My hair was a little darker then.
I met with Blessed Pope John Paul back in 1993. I had just finished at Maynooth and was unsure what to do. He said to me "Do not be afraid. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity. Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."
"Grand" says I, "I'm thinking of getting married, what do you think Holy Father?". He looked at me intently and said "Marriage is an act of will that signifies and involves a mutual gift, which unites the spouses and binds ... Continue reading ...
Monegasque Royal Wedding
There doesn't seem to have been as much coverage of the royal wedding in Monaco as one would expect so thought perhaps I'd post some photos as a public service. Badly fitting and not exactly showing the figure off in the best light - but enough about the soldier on the left. Prince Albert borrows Beyblades from his natural children to jazz up his bland suit. Rather nice vestments, including mitres - but why is there a bowling ball on a pedestal? Karolina Kurkova regrets travelling economy as the ... Continue reading ...
All Ireland Rally for Life, 2 July 2011, 2pm, Dublin (starting point a secret)

My friend L has a tendency to badger me into putting things on my blog. So here some information on the upcoming All-Ireland Rally for Life. Last year it was in Belfast so this year it's in Dublin, Saturday 2nd July at 2pm.
Now here's the thing - if you go to the Rally for Life website here you will find a range of nice things, including pre-Rally Mass times and venues - what you won't find, at least not easily, is a hint as to where the rally actually starts. Might be an idea to put that o... Continue reading ...
Flags and other matters

Not talking about any funeral in particular but at Catholic funerals in Ireland -
Vestments should be black or violet (I'm not aware the Irish Bishops Conference has given permission for white)

Gay Pride
I never thought I'd be saying this but I think I'll be voting to put a Gay into the Aras. No, not that one, this one. He's probably the most conservative candidate since Dana. I had dinner with him once, a truly embarrassing experience. Someone mentioned bringing the Olympics to Dublin and I thought they were having a laugh and I ploughed in with what a ridiculous idea, beyond stupid, not a single facility suitable for any sport (this was before the aquatic centre had been built). Everyone... Continue reading ...
Dead by definition
I see the Gaeltacht is to be defined out of existence. The Cork Examiner is reporting that the Gaeltacht Bill will stipulate that within defined districts there must be "at least two-thirds of a district’s population be shown by census data to be daily speakers of Irish. The language should be predominant in a community’s social and institutional domains, schools should teach entirely through Irish and religious services, businesses, sports clubs and other local activities should be throu... As Dirk Gently once said
I fear some people have misunderstood my expression of sympathy for David Norris. And in a funny way it proves my point, which was that it is almost impossible to discuss any aspect of child abuse. Attempting to examine any sense of context, explanation, clarification, differentitation immediately turns you into a paedo supporter. Why are the differences important you might say. Who cares if the abuser is abusing a fifteen year old rather than an eight year old? And people have said that t... Continue reading ...
My "I agree with Nick" moment
Okay, I will say this only once, I hope - I have some sympathy for David Norris. There, I've said it, that wasn't so hard. He is being attacked because of an interview he gave to Magill magazine back in 2001. You can read the full Magill article here: Page One, Page Two, Page Three. The Indo covers the story reasonably well here. The gist, as presented, including by people like me who would sooner vote for Ratko Mladic than David Norris, is that he said some things back in 2001 that can read... Continue reading ...
Another one bites the dust

Reading the news
Someone was complaining to me this morning that it was disgraceful that the Catholic Church was still able to wield so much power, that it could continue to block prosecutions arising from the Ryan Report into abuse in industrial schools. News organisations, including the Irish Times, are reporting, that no one has been prosecuted over the discoveries made by the Ryan report. It seems from a written submission to the United Nations Committee on Torture, that 11 files have been forwarded to th... Continue reading ...
Elton John introduced Stephen Gately to his "husband" and then lent his glasses to Mr Justice Beatson

It's weird. Earlier today I put up a short post with just a photograph/work of art featuring Elton John breastfeeding a child and pondering the fact that really anything is now morally possible. Despite being continually assured during its passage that civil partnership was not marriage, and would not be in breach of our constitution, the media continually refer to homosexual partners as "husbands" (why not "wives"? Makes as much sense) as for example after the death of Stephen Gately on R... Continue reading ...

Thank you to all my loyal readers who wrote to express their sympathy during my recent bout of carpal tunnerl syndrome. Actually that's not strictly true - no one wrote. I've been away, concentrating on a creative writing project, for which, I am rather proud to relate, I this very day, received an award. Awards, of course, aren't important to writers like myself - it's the second award I've received for my work. It should be published shortly, perhaps tomorrow.

 Economic Left/Right: -2.00 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.08
Fresh of the back of the ghastly discovery that I'm in agreement with Patsy Mc Garry and Marie Collins, comes the news that I'm not a crazy right wing reactionary, but a warm, cosy slightly left of centre libertarian - see my political compass above.

This week the Left Hand of Darkness becomes the first person ever to require a teleprompter when addressing the Indian Houses of Parliament. He's been described as a "hypnotising speaker". Quite. "We thought Obama is a trained orator and skilled in the art of mass address with his continuous eye contact," an official, who did not wish to be identified because of security restrictions, said. It's a bit of a truism that when things don't go well at home, political leaders take to the world st... Continue reading ...
Ireland's own Andrew Jackson
Leo: Andrew Jackson, in the main foyer of his White House had a big block of cheese. Toby: Huh. Leo: I am making a mental list of those who are snickering, and even as I speak I am preparing appropriate retribution. The block of cheese was huge - over two tons. And it was there for any and all who might be hungry. Toby: Leo, wouldn't this time be better spent plotting a war against a country that can't possibly defend itself against us? Leo: We can do that later, Toby. Right now I'm talking about... Continue reading ...

Rather extraordinary story from Great Britain today about the Labour MP Phil Woolas. Seems he said something unpleasant and untrue about a fellow candidate during the general election. As a result two high court judges have deemed him unelected and barred him from standing or even voting for three years. Compare this with Willie O'Dea, TD, who made false and defamatory comments about a fellow candidate of a much more serious nature than Mr Woolas and probably perjured himself in the process.... Different people have different views on immigration. Some would basically abandon all border controls and let people move anywhere in the world. But surely we can all agree on something, a consensus we can all share, a position we can all embrace, and that is that no one, no matter how dodgy,... Continue reading ...

Okay so the country has been brought to ruin. We know that certain bankers were borrowing money from themselves to buy their own shares to keep the prices high.
