Quality time

I was lying in bed on Sunday morning happily asleep.  It was eight o'clock.  Suddenly the door is kicked open.  Teresa Benedicta Maria enters.

"Dad, I want you to take me to the playground".

"Go away!" I responded lovingly.

"But you promised."

"What do you mean I promised?  I never promised I'd take you to the playground" I replied patiently.

"You did!  The last time I asked you to take me you said it was too cold and too wet and you said we couldn't go until it's sunny.  Well it's sunny n...

I had an extraordinary experience today, a triumph over prevarication - well more of a tribute to prevarication.  After almost two years of deafness in my right ear today I went and had it syringed.  It was an amazing experience, from the first feeling of warmth moving into the ear to the bizarre feeling of lightheadedness to the sudden moment of unclogging when I could finally hear again.

So, like all good reformed characters, if you find yourself with blocked ears, go and see the doctor or n...

Apparently as you get older it's the little things that begin to annoy you more and more.

One of the things that annoys the hell out of me is the disappearance of the "the" from the "the Titanic".  Mostly I blame the film obviously, but that's no excuse for people in Belfast to be calling the Titanic, "Titanic".  Where will it end?  Will we start calling the City Hall, "City Hall".  Will the Mater and the Royal lose their articles?

Apparently in 1980 the US Navy stopped attaching the article to...

Our Lady of Lourdes and some daughterly quips

We had a lovely Mass in the parish last night for the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.  The Mc Camley's were present in full force, the boys serving and coping manfully with all sorts of additionalities from incense, offertory processions, and the sacrament of the sick (experty introduced by the Parish Priest to ensure that no time-wasters who weren't, in the words of the Code, "in danger", came forward).  The last time we had such a thing in a neighbouring church I was the only healthy person i...

St Blaise

Posted by Christopher Mc on Thursday, February 3, 2011, In : Family and friends

Mary (aged 5) came home from school today full of tales of St Blaise.  She'd had her throat blessed at school and very much enjoyed the experience.

"St Blaise was a holy man and a doctor from a country called Armenia and one day he did a miracle on a child who had swallowed a goldfish bowl".

"A goldfish bowl?"

"Yes, it was a miracle;  nobody knows how St Blaise got it out"

"Are you sure it wasn't a fish bone?  I think it was probably a fish bone"

"No it was definitely a fish bowl.  Fr Joe told us ...

Every night before I go to bed I make the school lunches for the four children;  it's not a difficult job, but it's an annoying job.  You've to make sure that there's bread, you've to dig through school bags and find the lunch boxes;  everyone who makes school lunches knows what I'm talking about.  I make them and leave them on the dinner table at each child's seat and in the morning they put them in their bags.

For the past few mornings Teresa Benedicta Maria has been getting up an hour early...

Following up on this story because I know readers are more interested in mundane aspects of my existence than my views on the great events of the day or my film reviews.

Some people are very paranoid - they never want to appear on the internet in any shape or form, disguise, passing reference.  If I mention someone with long hair I get three texts to check if it's them.  If I mention baldness, curates in their early to mid forties presume I'm getting at them.  But children don't mind so I'll...

During the Celtic Tiger years it was de rigueur to hold children's birthday parties in "fun" places - entire classes of six year olds at Funtasia or the Kangaroo Club for headache enducing celebrations at 15 quid a head.

Well those days are over so I've a cunning plan for when Teresa Benedicta Maria turns four next month - the Swedish Party!

Monica: Did you just smell my hair?

Pete: Nooo. Uh-huh, no way. What? No.

Monica: Oh God.

Pete: What?

Monica: You still have feelings for me don’t you?

That's from Season 3, Episode 21 of Friends, the one with a chick and a duck.

I received a strong complaint from a Democratic supporting reader from America about my recent post which mentioned, in passing, the cost of the visit to India by Barack Hussein Jimmy Carter Obama.  He correctly pointed out that the $200 million per day figure had been widely shown to be untrue.  I am happy to make that correction.
