Breaking News.
The Israeli Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, has summoned the Irish Ambassador to Israel, Breifne O'Reilly, to explain why a senior member of the Oireachtas, Senator David Norris, had abused his position as a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs, to interfere in an Israeli court case.
"This was a clear attempt to pervert the course of justice, to interfere with the sentencing of a convicted child rapist. We are shocked and outraged at this attempt by a foreign power to assert overt influence over our courts. That sort of arrogance may be part of the discredited political class in Ireland, but this is Jerusalem, not Dublin." said Mr Lieberman.
Colm O'Gorman, Executive Director of Amnesty International, has called for Senator Norris to resign, and for a full judicial inquiry into the activities of Oireachtas members.
"This abuse is systemic, organised and directed" he said. "This child rapist visited Ireland on a number of occasions and stayed with Senator Norris. Are we expected to believe he was unaware of his activities? Did he report him to the Gardai at any stage or the HSE? Has there been any attempt to discover if there are Irish victims of this paedophile plumber?"
