What a difference a day makes

Posted by Mc Camley on Thursday, April 26, 2012, In : Current affairs

The Irish media have been gushing about the appearance of Joanna O’Riordan at the United Nations.  And rightly so.  She is a 16 year old from Cork - and as if being from Cork was not enough to warrant gushing, she has total amelia, a condition which means she has no proper limbs.  She is extremely positive about her condition and has a tremendous passion.  This is reflected in stories in The Cork Examiner, RTE, the Cork Independent, The Sun, the Irish Echo, the Student News and Irish Centr...

Shock news: children being aborted in abortion clinic

Posted by Mc Camley on Monday, February 27, 2012, In : Current affairs

Rick: How can you close me up? On what grounds?
Captain Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! [a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]
Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Captain Renault: [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much.
[aloud]
Captain Renault: Everybody out at once!

Lots of people are running around in a confused state after the Daily Telegraph sting operation revealed that it's quite possible for women to have abortions in Great Britain for reasons other...

Dear God, when can we get a proper Day for Life?

Posted by Mc Camley on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, In : Church in Ireland

Sunday was the Catholic Church's Day for Life in Ireland.  Once more it was, I was going to say a joke, but it's worse than that.  It costs some money to organise and the result is entirely negative.  It is so bland and wet that no one, absolutely no one could tell what yesterday's was about.

Secondly, it's heralded as a joint initiative, with an agreed theme, of the Church in Scotland, Ireland and England and Wales.  Well here's a tip - try having it on the same day.  What possible reason is ...

Some good news from Liechtenstein and a leader to be proud of

Posted by Mc Camley on Monday, September 19, 2011, In : Current affairs

The people of Liechtenstein yesterday (Sunday) voted in a referendum to maintain the country's legal ban on abortion.

The head of state, Prince Alois, had declared in advance that he would not sign such a bill into law.

Fiddling with news - Rally for Life, Dublin, 2011

Posted by Christopher Mc on Monday, July 4, 2011, In : Church in Ireland

Family and I attended the Rally for Life in Dublin on Saturday - the wife has some coverage including photos of the kids and some old guy here.  This website has good photos - it says there were about 8,000 at the rally.

I had been doing my usual moaning about the lack of attendance by the bishops who I think should be in the forefront of the rally every year - so credit where it's due to Seamus Hegarty, Bishop of Derry for attending.

Bishop of Derry (on the the right) - priest on the left is c...

All Ireland Rally for Life, 2 July 2011, 2pm, Dublin (starting point a secret)

Posted by Christopher Mc on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, In : Current affairs

My friend L has a tendency to badger me into putting things on my blog.  So here some information on the upcoming All-Ireland Rally for Life.  Last year it was in Belfast so this year it's in Dublin, Saturday 2nd July at 2pm.

Now here's the thing - if you go to the Rally for Life website here you will find a range of nice things, including pre-Rally Mass times and venues - what you won't find, at least not easily, is a hint as to where the rally actually starts.  Might be an idea to put that o...

“a teetotal, mean-spirited, right-wing, narrow-minded, conservative Christian bigot”

Posted by Christopher Mc on Saturday, March 5, 2011, In : Movies

No, it's not another email to me from the editor of the Irish Catholic.  It's how Jane Russell, who died this week, aged 89, described herself.

She also said:  “People should never, ever have an abortion. Don’t talk to me about it being a woman’s right to choose what she does with her own body. The choice is between life and death,”.

Jane had an abortion as a young woman which rendered her infertile.

Her family have asked, in lieu of flowers, that people donate to Care Net Pregnancy ...

Thank you to all my loyal readers who wrote to express their sympathy during my recent bout of carpal tunnerl syndrome.  Actually that's not strictly true - no one wrote.  I've been away, concentrating on a creative writing project, for which, I am rather proud to relate, I this very day, received an award.  Awards, of course, aren't important to writers like myself - it's the second award I've received for my work.  It should be published shortly, perhaps tomorrow.
