Books
"One Good Turn" by Kate Atkinson My friend A put me on to this writer and I randomly chose this particular book from the shelf in Easons. About a hundred pages in and it's really good. Edinburgh's a great venue for any story. The characters are introduced and built up in a very straightforward way but you know the plot is going to be involved and twisted. A few pages before bed now... |
"The Admirable Life of Mother Mariana" The apparitions of Our Lady of Good Success to a nun in Quito in the 1600s. Seems to have some church recognition. Foretells awful things which will happen to the Church and society in the 20th Century. Unfortunately the book is published by the dodgy folks at Tradion in Action, a Lefebvrist organisation who view Vatican II as embracing heresy. So read, but with caution. But I was loaned it by a reliable person. I'll blog on it when I've read more of it. |
"Lies" by Michael Grant Reading the "Gone" series by Michael Grant. Currently on book 3, "Lies" (after "Gone" and "Hunger"). I know what you're thinking, Dawsons Creek? Granted the photo does suggest that a little but this series is more Stephen King than Joey Potter. Set in a small town in California, the premises are: everybody over 15 vanishes, some kids develop super powers, a scary monster lives in the desert and everyone behaves like it's Lord of the Flies. Oh, and some teenage romance as well. Worth a read. |
"An Exorcist Tells His Story" by Gabriele Amorth Read this book several years ago and re-reading it now for the Friends of St Joseph, an Irish Schulerkreis. One of the main themes is that exorcism requires the authority of the Church and few bishops want to grant that authority. But without the authority, people are playing into the hands of Satan - the one who was unwilling to serve, who would not accept authority. To face down Satan one needs obedience and humility. A good read, though not as exciting as Malachi Martin or William Blatty. |
