Sunday was out buying paint – a job that takes a long time, particularly when you are trying to find a particular colour.  I had  little plastic toy bath (pink with blue/green legs) with me – the colour I wanted was the bluey/green as it’s the colour of our box room, one of which walls was moved last week to allow a staircase to be installed for our attic conversion.  I was wandering up and down Homebase lost in Crown and Dulux and heritage paints and own brands and nothing looked remotely like the colour.  Problem was solved by Michael (9) pushing a large button while saying “Daddy, what’s this for?” which resulted in a very helpful youth appearing who mixed me a small pot of paint within minutes.

This was a much better result than my own “Daddy, what’s this for?” moment when at the age of about four, I pushed a small red button in the front hall of the Bank of Ireland in Donegall Place, Belfast (beside Marks and Spencer’s).  The result that time was not a helpful young man but shutters descending rapidly, a bank manager running down the stairs and an army Saracen mounting the pavement.  Thanks to my helpful contribution the button was subsequently rendered silver and moved to a more discreet place.
