A better translation is available from Chiesa and it is worth a read.

As always with Pope Benedict, you get something deeper and richer beyond the presenting issue, in this case the excommunications.  He looks at the openness of the Church as teacher (and remember, this is the Pope who had dinner with Hans Kung despite all the unpleasant things Kung has said about him), and you can see the pastoral concern he has for the faithful in the SSPX.

But of course, I enjoy also the bits where he doesn't miss and hit the wall:

"And should we not admit that some unpleasant things have also emerged in Church circles? At times one gets the impression that our society needs to have at least one group to which no tolerance may be shown; which one can easily attack and hate. And should someone dare to approach them – in this case the Pope – he too loses any right to tolerance; he too can be treated hatefully, without misgiving or restraint."
